ABSTRACT Objective  To explore the relationship between self-care ability, social support and adjustment of colostomy patients. Methods A descriptive and correlative research design was used in this study. 129 colostomy patients from five hospitals in Guangzhou were recruited by convenient sampling in this study. Ostomy Adjustment Scale (OAS), the Exercise of Self-Care Agency Scale (ESCA) and Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS) were used to measure the level and degree of adjustment, self-care ability and social support of colostomy patients. The data were analyzed with Software SPSS13.0. Results Self-care ability of colostomy patients was positively correlated with the adjustment((P<0.01)). Social support of colostomy patients was positively correlated with adjustment (P<0.05). Conclusions Most colostomy patients had a moderate level of general adjustment. The majority of patients had a moderate level of self-care ability. Patients received the most support from their family, followed by other people (leaders, relatives and colleagues), friends.
