           Introducton :

            Pressure ulcers are an internationally recognized patient safety problem and recognized as a clinical indicator of the standard of care provided.

            The population is aging rapidly. Asia and Europe are the two regions where a significant number of countries face severe population aging in the near future. In these regions within twenty years many countries will face a situation where the largest population will be those over 65 and average age will be approaching 50.( wikimediafoundation, October 27, 2009)Physiological effects of aging, the elderly are particularly at risk for developing in damage of the skin and underlying tissue and, in most instances, are an adverse outcome of a healthcare admission.             -Classification of pressure ulcers            -Management at different stages            -Pressure off loading devices            -Case studies Preventive  protocol :

            -Determine and eliminate the cause of damage            -Caregiver education of risk and preventive factors            -Increase activity and mobilization            -Promote good nutrition            -Skin hygiene-maintain skin PH, protect skin from excretion and body fluid and regular moisturizing of skin            -Incontinence management            -Regular turning            -Appropriate use of protective devices, lifting equipment and mattress
