OBJECTIVE
Peeling of the skin barriers at repeated exchange of appliances causes stripped stratum corneum, decreases human skin’s barrier function, and increases the risk of skin trouble. We investigate whether the combination with skin sealants can reduce the stripped stratum corneum when the skin barriers are peeled.
METHODS
Sections of the skin barriers were plastered on the lower abdomen of four volunteer (mean age 43.5 ± 3.7) to measure the amount of stripped stratum corneum cells (%) and the human skin’s barrier function (skin hydration of the stratum corneum and transepidermal water loss :TEWL) in the skin sealants A combination group, skin sealants B combination group, and skin barriers alone group.  For the amount of stripped stratum corneum cells, the stratum corneum cells attached to the 36 stripped samples were stained with eosin to calculate the area rate.
RESULTS
The skin barriers alone had larger peel force than that of the combination with skin sealants.  Larger rate of stripped stratum corneum was observed in the skin barrier alone group.  The skin sealants A showed a smaller rate of stripped stratum corneum than that of the skin sealants B.
CONCLUSION
Combination with skin sealants showed a smaller rate of stripped stratum corneum than that of skin barriers alone, suggesting that skin peel irritation can be reduced.
