OBJECTIVE: Doing more with less is a theme common to healthcare. Frequently education of clinical staff takes a backseat to provision of direct patient care. However, the need for ongoing education regarding clinical care and new therapies or technologies remains high. In order to meet the needs of a growing clinical staff at Children's Medical Center Dallas, a webpage was developed to provide education, supply information and clinical information via the hospital's intranet. Access to the intranet was increased during recent technology upgrades allowing the bedside nurse to obtain information without leaving the patient's room. Thus, the webpage serves as an immediate way for the staff nurse to retrieve clinical information and reduces the time spent in non-clinical activities.
OUTCOMES: The bedside nurse will experience increased autonomy to provide direct patient care through immediate access to computer-based learning tools. This will allow the WOC nurse to provide more direct patient care and serve as a greater resource for the bedside nurse allowing her to meet the immediate needs of her patient.
CONCLUSIONS: The availability of a WOC webpage provides the bedside nurse with immediate access to pertinent clinical information enabling her to provide direct patient care with greater efficiency. The webpage also serves as a portal for the clinical staff to enter for educational information related to wound, ostomies and continence issues.
FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE: Financial support was provided by Children's Medical Center Dallas through provision of technical staff for web page development.
