Skin care jeopardy: An innovative way of providing education for care partners on pressure ulcer prevention

Suzanne Stewart, MS, RN, CWOCN, Robert Packer Hospital, Wound, Ostomy, continence Nurse specialist, 1 Guthrie Square, Sayre, PA 18840

Purpose: To provide a different approach to mandatory education for care partners in our facility on pressure ulcer prevention.

Objectives: The care partners are required to complete mandatory training twice a year on skin and related issues. This requirement is due to our ongoing commitment to our patients and pressure ulcer prevention. Previous methods used for education included: lecture, discussion, video, demonstration and return demonstration. The use of a game tool for learning was discussed as an option to present pressure ulcer prevention information in a different way. It also gave me an idea of what information was understood or what needed further discussion or information.

Method: Care partners were divided into teams and a captain was chosen. There were three categories of questions available with different point values placed for each question category. The topics included: Pressure ulcer prevention, pressure ulcer dressings and skin care products. Questions were chosen by the team members. The first team to successfully answer the questions received the points. This session was followed up with a post-test to evaluate knowledge on pressure ulcer prevention.

Outcome: All care partners had to complete the sessions. At the end of the sessions there was a post-test. All care partners had to receive a score of 85% or greater on the post-test.

Conclusion: The use of a game was a creative and fun way to provide education to care partners on pressure ulcer prevention and skin care management. The successful completion of the post-tests showed that the information was understood and that the care partners were aware of pressure ulcer prevention strategies. The use of a game can be an alternative way to provide education to staff on topics such as pressure ulcer prevention.
