Problem: Pressure ulcers are costly to the health and well-being of the hospitalized patient. An increased focus on evidence-based research is needed to establish a foundation of evidence to support the care provided to patients. Purpose: To investigate nurses perceptions of barriers and facilitators to using research in preventing pressure ulcers in the care of hospitalized adults. Research Questions: 1) What do nurses perceive as barriers to using research in preventing pressure ulcers in the care of hospitalized adults? 2) What do nurses perceive as facilitators to using research in preventing pressure ulcers in the care of hospitalized adults? Methodology: A convenience sample of 44 Registered Nurses (RN's) working on inpatient units participated, completing the 29-item questionnaire with demographics. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 13.0 was used to analyze data. Descriptive statistics and frequency distribution were used. Results: The demographic profile of the participants reflected middle age, Caucasian, female associate degree nurses with an average of 17 years experience who were currently working full time. Analysis of research question one: 1. Lack of time to read research (70.5%) 2. Lack of time to implement new ideas (68.1%). 3. Lack of knowledge of research (61.4%) 4. Inability to understand statistical analyses (63.7%). Analysis of question two: 1. Need for education support and in-services on conducting, using and reading research (36.1%). 2. Enhancing administrative support (25.0%). 3. Need for increased time to conduct, read and apply research (19.4%). 4. Need to make research and avenues to access it more readily available Conclusion: Findings were consistent with previous studies conducted in identifying barriers to utilizing research. This study suggests that use of research in preventing pressure ulcers in the care of the hospitalized adult could be improved through organizational commitment related to support of staff in research activities.
