The Importance of Developing a Wound Care Program in the Hospital setting.

Wound care is quickly becoming an interesting field for many health care workers. What some healthcare professionals don't realize is that wound care is a specialty area of health care, requiring special training and continuing education. Federal guidelines are now mandating hospitals to create protocols and programs for the treatment of wounds, and prevention of skin breakdown. It is imperative that the facility realizes that it takes a team effort to treat and prevent wounds. It is no longer only the nurses responsibilty to prevent pressure ulcers in a facility by turning the patient every 2 hours. It is also the responsibilty of the radiologist, dialysis nurse, OR staff, interventional radiology group, etc.. With the combined efforts of a facility team, healthcare outcomes for wound management and prevention should prove to be more positive in the future.
