The purpose of this program was to develop wound care competency trained field clinicians. There was a need for accurate wound assessment and management plans prior to CWOCN direct consultation. Competency trained field clinicians (RNs,LPNs)were needed due to the continuous growth of the home care wound patient. The program provided a combination of teaching strategies for the adult learner:didactic,videotapes,power-point presentations and grand rounds. Hands-on experience was also provided during home visits and skills lab. Sufficient time was allocated for the training. The program was incorporated into agency orientation. Positive outcomes provided decreased patient visits and decrease in wound care supply costs per episode of care. The agency also measured a decrease in re-hospitalization of the active wound care patient population.
