Product Adaptations in Pediatric Ostomy Care

Teri Robinson, RN, BSN, CWON, Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, Lead Wound/Ostomy Nurse, 92 West Miller Street, Orlando, FL 32806, Bonita Yarjau, RN, BN, ET, Health Sciences Centre,, ETN, Winnipeg,MB, MB R3A 1R9, Canada, and Bev Biller, BSN, RN, CWOCN, New England Medical Center and The Floating Hospital for Children, WOCN, Boston State, MA, MA 02111.

Problem: There are not as many product options for pediatric ostomy care as compared to the older patient. Nurses who primarily work with children have had to learn how to be creative and adapt their practice and product selection for adults to create pediatric solutions.

Past Management: Skin barrier pastes are widely used with adults but may not be suitable in some pediatric applications. New skin barrier technologies have provided more options that have resulted in a reevaluation of current practices.

Clinical Approach: Through the use of case studies this poster will demonstrate how a new skin barrier product can be modified to meet the unique needs of the pediatric ostomy population. WOC/ET nurses in several different pediatric facilities will demonstrate how to use an extended wear skin barrier ring to improve and maintain a secure pouch seal while protecting fragile peristomal skin.

Outcomes: The availability of new products has improved the care of pediatric ostomy patients. Ultimately, the beneficiary of new innovations is our patients, however staff and family also respond positively. In some cases, these solutions have resulted in changes in facility protocols in the NICU.

Conclusions: Product innovations and technology continue to create better solutions for managing difficult stomas and providing a higher quality of life for infants with stomas.
