Hospital supply costs are second only to personnel costs and can account for up to 35% of a hospital's operating budget. At a time when all member's of the hospital staff are being called upon to be fiscally responsible, it is only fair that the WOCN team also look at ways that they can contribute to cost savings. Our objective was to use an ostomy starter kit system to standardize the quantity of homegoing supplies for our new ostomy patients. The problem with homegoing patient supplies was the lack of standardization in the amount of supplies issued. New ostomates were typically given an entire box of appropriate ostomy pouches and a tube of stomahesive paste. If the ostomate was determined to have special pouching needs, pouches in the prior issued box could not be utilized and thus were wasted. Our solution was to utilize a free ostomy starter kit program offered by a national ostomy manufacturer. The hospital supply system was changed to provide charging for single use pouches. This change alone resolved waste by cutting down on homegoing supplies. Starter kits were given out upon discharge. The starter kit had additional ostomy product samples and information included, in addition to two pouch samples and a tube of stomahesive paste. Patients were signed up with the manufacturer's on-line system in order for them to receive an additional 5 ostomy pouches at home. This system also made it easy for the WOCN staff to track orders, and order additional samples if required. A retrospective review of data was used to determine the overall savings. These additional supplies eliminated the need for homegoing supplies, which lowered overall hospital supply costs.
