People with ostomies sometimes require the use of a non-adhesive appliance to protect or treat skin for various reasons. Peristomal dermatitis and peristomal ulcers may be managed with skin treatments that need to be done on a frequent basis, often once or twice daily. These would be difficult to manage with an adhesive ostomy appliance as it can not and should not be removed that often for treatment. Use of a non-adhesive appliance allows for frequent visualization of the peristomal skin and also makes it possible to do skin care treatments as often as needed without removing an adhesive from the skin. This poster displays a method of making an non-adhesive appliance that can be made from products that are available to WOC nurses if a traditional non-adhesive appliance is not in your inventory.
