Doing Away With Scissors and Patterns Using A New Technology Of Ostomy Skin Barriers

Mary A. Gerlach, MSN, APRN-BC, CWOCN, Herny Ford Macomb Hospital, Clinical Nurse Specialist/WOCN, 15855 Nineteen Mile Road, Clinton Township, MI 48038

PURPOSE:  This abstract will provide an overview and case study results of our product evaluations testing the new technology of moldable, custom-fitting ostomy skin barriers* intended to avoid the use of pattern making and scissors.  OBJECTIVES:  Through product evaluations determine if this product (1) provides adequate peristomal skin protection and adequate wear time with a variety of stoma shapes and sizes, including irregular, and oval shaped stomas, (2) can be used with a variety of different patient applications including the well constructed and problem stomas, and (3) increases application convenience by patients and staff.  OUTCOMES:  Results of our product evaluation demonstrates that this new technology of ostomy skin barriers is easier to apply and still provides adequate wear time and protection of the peristomal skin, even for the less than ideally constructed stoma. DISCUSSION:  The Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurses Society (WOCN) states that minimal acceptable wear time for a fecal or urinary pouching system is three days and in our experience with this product, all patients were able to achieve this outcome and many were able to achieve a longer wear time.  We have also found that we are using less accessory ostomy products and have decreased the number of different ostomy products stocked at the hospital.  We believe this product appears to simplify ostomy application for both patients and licensed and non-licensed personnel alike.  A frequent positive comment by both patients and health care personnel regarding the product is the convenience of avoiding the use of scissors and pattern making for application. CONCLUSION:  Based upon the results of our clinical trials, we are converting our primary ostomy supply line to custom fitting moldable skin barriers.
