Integrative approach to identifying and treating pressure ulcers in an acute setting

Krystyna Dixon, BA, RN, CWOCN, DUKE RALEIGH HOSPITAL, CLINICAL NURSE EDUCATOR, 6304 secret drive, raleigh, NC 27612

An Integrative Approach to Pressure Ulcer Education through use of a comprehensive poster education tool, laminated handouts for each nursing staff member and an information pamphlet designed for the patients’ caregiver. (Laminated handouts not included in abstract but will be shown on the poster).

Despite numerous in-services and mandatory yearly education appropriate staging and wound care was at best haphazard. A concerted effort was made to integrate staging of ulcers, appropriate wound care onto one form that would be easily accessible and readable. The poster was designed to assist the nurse in pressure ulcer / skin wound education with treatment modalities. Pocket sized cards were produced in response to the positive feedback from nurses and nursing aides.

An integrative approach involved also the patient’s family/support system. Therefore a pressure ulcer education pamphlet was designed to give families caring for the patient at home some much needed information on how to prevent and manage the pressure ulcer.
