Collagen Matrix Dressing Containing EDTA- A new piece of the Wound Healing Puzzle?

Judy Madura, RD, RN, CWOCN, Good Samaritan Wound Care Center, Clinical Manager, Wound Care Center, 1012 East Willetta, Phoenix,, AZ 85006

Banner Good Samaritan Wound Care Center sees in excess of 800 patients per month.  In dealing with any large patient population with chronic wounds, a consistent number become recalcitrant despite advanced treatment.  A potential new piece to the wound healing puzzle, collagen matrix dressing with EDTA (Ethylene Diamine Tetracetic Acid), was recently introduced to this center.

This collagen matrix dressing containing EDTA was evaluated as part of a multi-center, prospective trial using case studies.  Each patient was selected for their failure to heal in spite of the advanced products utilized in their treatment plan.  These patients present with chronic wounds of various etiologies and multiple co-morbidities.  Two collagen matrix dressings containing EDTA –with silver and without silver- were applied to clean wounds and covered with the appropriate secondary dressing and/or compression bandage.  The dressings were left in place up to 3 days with an evaluation period of 6 weeks.

This poster presentation will detail the wound healing outcomes using this product.  The preliminary outcomes suggest that this collagen matrix dressing containing EDTA will become a new piece to the wound healing puzzle for patients with recalcitrant wounds.  In addition this wound care center will add this new product to their advance wound care formulary.
