Kinda E. Walden, RN, BSN, CWOCN, Jewish Hospital Kenwood of the Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati, Wound, Ostomy, Continence Nurse, 4777 East Galbraith Road, Cincinnati, OH 45236

Topic:  The rental costs assosciated with air mattresses and overlays to provide quality pressure redistridbution were exorbitant.  Jewish Hospital planned to reduce its dependence on rental products by purchasing a mattress replacement that would improve patient clinical outcomes along with providing significant cost savings.  Purpose:  The facility was determind to find an alternative to the rising cost of rental therapy products as well as improve clinical outcomes.  Our 200 bed acute care facility rental cost had reached upto approximately $300,00.00 per year.  Through the purchase of new mattresses our goals were as follows:  1. Improve patient comfort. 2. Enhance patient and staff satisfaction.  3.  Reduce time to place at risk patients on a treatment surface.  4. Improve clinical outcomes.  5. Achieve significant cost savings to justify the new mattress purchase.  Objective:  Our facility rental expenses had reached approximately $25,000.00 per month and we felt an obligation to find a more cost effective means of preventing and treating pressure ulcers.  Our facility evaluated various mattresses from several manufacturers, observing patient comfort level and examining the patients skin routinely for reddness or breakdown over pressure points.  Outcomes:  After extensive evaluation, Jewish Hospital chose the Accumax Quantum Convertable, a non-powered redistribution surface.  In addition to pressure redistribution for up to & including Stage IV pressure ulcers, it also offer it became the standard support surface for prevention as well as a treatment surface for Stage III and IV pressure ulcers.  The results were as follows:  DECREASED facility acquired pressure ulcers by 16% .(average before implementation was 22% and 6% after implemntation)  Significant reduction in rental bed / overlays used for pressure redistribution therapy.  Decrease rental costs in our first year with Accumax by $15,000.00 per month with a projected savings of $900,000.00 over the five year life of the new support surfaces.
