Topic: Educating nursing students regarding skin assessments and pressure ulcers during their pediatric clinical rotation

Purpose: With the changes in CMS reimbursement regarding pressure ulcers, nursing students need to have proper education on skin assessments and identification of pressure ulcers. The need for this education is to start student nurses off on the right foot when assessing a patient’s skin.  Nursing students need to understand how to assess and prevent pressure ulcers in pediatric patients. By educating nursing students, we can provide nursing students with the correct knowledge when caring for pediatric patients.

Objective: To improve the way nursing students assess the skin of a pediatric patient and educate nursing students on pressure ulcers and how to prevent them

Outcomes: By providing this education to nursing students, we would be able to teach them new ways to improve the outcome of pediatric patient’s skin. The education will also help in minimizing skin breakdown and incidence of pressure ulcer occurrence. The nursing students will be able to use this education to provide care to patient’s during their pediatric clinical rotation.
