With the agreement of Bologna in 1999, Europe set up a system designed to promote student mobility and to establish the equivalence and recognition of the qualifications obtained. The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) relates to courses at university level. These credit points are assigned to the various elements of a curriculum according to the workload to be accomplished. They are cumulative and allow the student to pass from a lower to a higher university degree once the required number of credits has been obtained. Since 2006, the European Association of Wound Care (EWMA) has given congress participants the opportunity to validate some of the congress content within a system that is unique to EWMA. The University of applied sciences (HES) of Western Switzerland in Geneva suggested a collaborative effort in order to validate and give credibility to this system via the ECTS. This requires that the congress content be formalised and presented in such a way as to meet the criteria for obtaining these credits. From the nursing point of view, it shall be a unique and very meaningful way to underline the value of our post graduate training courses. The first EWMA congress at which European credits will be available will be the 2010 Congress to be held in Geneva.
