Objective
Determine changes in quality of life among colostomates who changed their disposal method by using an ostomy appliance which can be flushed down a toilet.
Method
1)       Period:  SEP - DEC 2008
2)       Participants and Method:  Questionnaire for 32 colostomates interviewed by WOC nurses within one week after trial
3)       Method of Analysis:  Descriptive statistics
4)       Ethical Considerations:  Written consent was obtained to ensure anonymity and that the quality of care would not be compromised.
Results
1)       Participants:  32 subjects including 22 males and 10 females, aged 45 to 83 (average of 62.5 years).  Fourteen had their stoma for < 1 year, sixteen for 1 – 5 years, and two for 5 to 10 years.
2)       Survey Results:  A significant reduction of time necessary for pouch changes was recorded, as the flushable pouch took an average of only 3.4 minutes compared to 6.6 minutes with a regular ostomy appliance.  More than half completed pouch changes in less than 3 minutes.  Twenty reported improvement in disposal technique, 16 saw a reduction in toilet paper, fifteen noticed less odor in the toilet, and thirteen had less toilet bowl mess.  Eighteen noticed less stool caught along the flange, and all experienced a reduction of stool on the skin barrier.  Eleven had a more positive attitude.  Six noticed that their pouch was not apparent under clothing, six felt less self conscious around family members, and four reported no longer feeling depressed about having to dispose of their waste via a pouch.
Conclusion
The flushable pouch resulted in reduced disposal time, less mess, and a simpler method for handling stomal effluent.  People who trialed this product reported a more positive attitude and an improvement in quality of life.
