4205 Life Style Pattern of Ostomate in Developing Country

When a person is facing with the surgery of stoma to pass the urine and stool,not only they have to deal with surgery but also to cope with the altered body image and life style.The major concern of this study is to assess the life style pattern of ostomate in the contest of developing nation. Life style issues that are greatest concern to people such as work,travel,diet,social situation,activities of daily living and sexual relation are included in this study.5o clients having colostomy or urostomy,who attended at stoma clinic of BP koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital were selected by using purposive sampling technique then semi structured interview questionnaire was used to collect the data.While the clinic was opened once a week,it took 10 weeks to collect data.The study finding revealed that the majority(82%) of ostomate had alteration in life style,including diminished willingness to work and travel due to the fear of stool leakage and lack of proper place to perform stoma care.Very few patients(20%)were actively involved in social activities.Patients had feelings of social insecurity,lack of self confidence,embarrassment and anxiety may result social isolation and withdrawl in social gathering.54% patients had very difficult to manage daily living activities because of the inadequacy of bags,early leakage,lack of knowledge and skill of stomacare.In this way majority of patients express worry about odor or leakage from the pouch during sexual activity,some fear about impotance. From above findings ,we can draw the conclusion that most of the ostomate had altered in lifestyle pattern.If they get strong family,social and technical support,they would regain their new life.
