Healing any wound can be problematic. Gelling foam technology offers a solution for a variety of clinical challenges.
Description of Past Management
The first of five patients used silver sulfadiazine and gauze dressings to an abdominal burn from a heating pad. This was the same treatment the second and third patients used as well. One used it for bilateral buttocks ulcers; the other for skin tears on the leg. The fourth individual used a 100% sodium carboxymethylcellulose (NaCMC) dressing with ionic silver, gauze and an ace wrap for a venous leg ulcer. The final patient used a hydrogel and gauze for ulcers on the leg.
Current Clinical Approach
Each of the patients was treated with the gelling foam technology. The burn injured patient was managed with the gelling foam dressing* as well as a 100% NaCMC dressing with ionic silver. The other four patients were managed with the same dressings. Each had the 100 % NaCMC dressing with ionic silver used at least once due to the color of the exudate. Compression therapy was part of the treatment for the three patients with leg ulcers.
Patient Outcomes
The patients all healed without complication.
Conclusions
The dressings proved to be comfortable for the patients. Some were pleased because they could shower with the dressings. Each stated the dressings removed easily and resulted in minimal pain during dressing changes. All stated their wounds felt better with the new protocol.
