4727 Awareness, Knowledge and Concerns on Pressure Ulcer Prevention and Treatment among Community Nurses and Hospital Nureses - A Status Study

OBJECTIVE

Understanding the nurses’ knowledge and the current status of clinical practice on pressure ulcer prevention and treatment. Methods

1. Design and sample

A convenient sampling method was performed to measure the attendants’ knowledge and concerns on pressure ulcer from 2007 to 2008 in Zhejiang Province in China. A total of 199 nurses from hospital and community participated in the survey.

2. Messures

Main contents include: the knowledge of pressure ulcer prevention and treatment; nurses’ clinical practice; the status of treatment conditions for pressure ulcers patients at community.3, Analysis
 Data analyzed by SPSS 13.0. Nonparametric χ2 tests were used to compare both groups regarding the proportions of age, education level etc. t Tests were applied to compare the mean knowledge score. 
Results
1. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups regarding age (P = 0.698> 0.05); while the education, professional title etc. have a significant difference (P <0.05).
2. Community nurses and hospital nurses scored 53.19 ± 13.17 and 63.3 ± 15.44 respectively in the knowledge survey (P <0.01) is statistically valid. 94.87% of community nurses, 93.44% of the hospital nurses feel their knowledge is insufficient.
3.Nurses, patient families and attendants are the main care providers for community pressure ulcer patients. Only 5.13% of community nurses and 23.33% hospital nurses use pressure ulcer risk tool to screening high risk patients. 42.55% of community nurses and 64.5% of hospital nurses felt satisfied with the treatment result.
Conclusion
1. The hospital nurses get better score on the knowledge than community nurses.
2. More training on pressure ulcer need to perform for the nurses in order to apply high quality care for patients.
3. Ways to improve community nurses knowledge are: sharing training information, bedside demonstration, and contact with the professional team for regular information exchange.
