ABSTRACT FOR WOCN/WCET
2010. PHOENIX, ARIZONA
PRINCIPAL AUTHOR - Elaine Cronin
CONTACT DETAILS - elainestoma@aol.com
CATEGORY - Research.
The author (Elaine) has, independently, recorded specific data for each new colorectal patient (that has passed through her department) to have undergone stoma formation at her hospital, (adults only) within the last 9 years (April 2001 – March 2010).
Elaine now feels that she has gathered sufficient data (860 patients) to make the data credible, quantifiable and of value.
No other institute (the author believes) has single handedly captured this size of data, and by one principal author. It is unique.
Elaine has always been interested in problematic stomas, and has become accustomed to there many presentations, i.e., the difference between partial muco-cutaneous separation, as compared to full separation. These can be discussed further during the presentation.
The audit tool (which Elaine is happy to disseminate) captured data such as:-
◦ Stoma complication rates. How many patients (out of 860) developed a problem
and how many had more than one problem?
◦ The types of stoma problems to be encountered,
◦ Reasons for surgical intervention. Does one disease type present with a
higher ratio of complications?
◦ Is gender significant? Men Vs Women
◦ Delayed discharge (anything in excess of 10 days). What caused the delay?
◦ Elective versus emergency procedures. Is it true that patient’s who have
emergency surgery have more complications?
◦ Does pre-operative siting had an impact on the surgical outcome,
◦ The percentage of convex products used in 860 patients
◦ The number of accessory products that were used in conjunction with a stoma
product.
Elaine would very much like the opportunity to present her findings to the nurses at the conference and to provide pivotal data that can be used to improve practice within their own institutes, and even encourage nurses across the globe to embark upon their own research of stomas.
