5222 Wound and Ostomy Classes Pique Interest and Collegiality

Cecelia C. Monge, RN, MS, CWOCN, University of Texas Medical Branch, Instructor Simulation Lab, Seabrook, TX
This poster will showcase via photographs the lectures and practicum opportunities in basic wound and ostomy care classes by a CWOCN simulation laboratory instructor given to third and fourth year nursing students and third year medical students at the same university.

This opportunity raises student awareness of what a CWOCN does for the patients requiring wound and ostomy care in a hospital setting.  It further stimulates an interest in the field of wound and ostomy care by the nursing students and builds collegiality between physicians and nurses, thus promoting positive outcomes for the patients and their families.

These classes introduce the role of the CWOCN to future physicians who will understand the resources available to them and call upon a CWOCN when expertise in wound and ostomy care is needed by the physician and their patient.

The basic wound and ostomy care demonstrated to the students and the subsequent practicum imparts this is an important science with a wide range of products that must be mastered in order to manage the pain of the wound, manage the wound, manage the ostomy, and plan the education of both the patient and the family.
