Management and troubleshooting of Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) occupies a significant amount of time for the WOC team in a tertiary Level 1 trauma center. The use of NPWT has significantly increased in volume and complexity. Many RNs expressed the desire to assist with and learn how to do the NPWT dressing changes. Some nurses come from other settings with this skill. The WOC team identified an opportunity to empower and enhance professional development for those staff members and allow the WOC nurse additional time for other role responsibilities.

Since staff time for education is precious, a strategy for educating select staff was developed. Managers in high use nursing areas were consulted and interested staff were identified. A module and post-test were developed that the staff nurse completed prior to a 4 hour block of clinical hands on practicum with the WOC nurse. Competency records are signed off by the WOC nurse and an annual competency tool is maintained at the unit level. Documentation tools are on the hospital intranet for easy accessibility.

This opportunity for staff has increased collaborative efforts and commitment to wound care. It has also championed staff on units to be more responsible for management of patients on NPWT with decreased time and calls to WOC nurses.

This skill is incorporated into unit based clinical ladders. The staff RN takes pride in the increased skills and professional growth.  Feedback has been positive from the participants, nurse managers, and the WOC team.
