Biographical Sketch:
Joan Junkin became dedicated to a wound specialty in 1992 while working as a research analyst for the AHCPR Pressure Ulcer Treatment guidelines panel. She attended wound, ostomy and continence education through MD Anderson Cancer Center and became certified in 1997. Joan spent 10 years developing the wound program at a 500 bed acute care facility. The last 3 years she has been an independent consultant, providing seminars, clinical consults and expert witness services in legal cases involving pressure ulcers.

Knowing that the NPUAP is a large and expert organization dedicated to prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers, the past 5 years Joan chose to focus more on incontinence associated dermatitis which had less attention worldwide. We have the Braden Scale and the NPUAP Staging system for pressure ulcers, but no widely used tools for IAD, so she developed the IAD-IT, to serve as a simple format for improving the identification and treatment of IAD. She has published research on the prevalence of IAD in acute care and published the IAD-IT tool. The tool has been translated into German for use in Austria and that group is conducting inter-rater reliability testing on the IAD-IT. It has been translated into Portugese for use in Brazil. Several English versions have been created, with permission, that incorporate specific products used by facilities such as University Medical Center, Tucson, Arizona.
