Bed Replacement and its’ relationship to Hospital Acquired Pressure Ulcers:

This poster represents a WOCNs professional practice role.   Working with purchasing, staff RN’s, being an advocate for patients and bringing all of the information gathered to administration to affect change.  My poster tells the story of how I collected data on HAPUs, surveyed all 266 beds in-house for the sturdiness of the bed frames and age of the mattresses upon them.  With facts in hand and the support of staff, I brought forth a proposal for a more controlled rental process and especially for the need for the purchase of new beds in the ICU and new mattresses for the rest of the general nursing units.  The poster illustrates our process of evaluating the best support surfaces for our patients’ and the need for including staff in a decision to benefit all concerned.

As the only WOCN in a hospital of 365 beds, it is my responsibility to employ efforts to affect changes in the protection of patients’ skin and the processes needed to ultimately make sound fiscal decisions.

Please join me in the journey to bed replacement and the maintenance of keeping our HAPUs under the national average.
