A survey monkey was done by the Nurse Educators and CWOCN's for the nursing staff of the units where the majority of patients with new ostomies recover post-operatively to identify the learning needs of the staff beyond "How to apply an ostomy pouch." The objectives were developed from the results of the survey. Three objectives were identified: Identify the learning needs of patients with a new ostomy as related to returning to a normal life. Describe different anatomical locations of ostomies and what it means for patients. Define appropriate ostomy products and their use.

The content included information to teach patients regarding diet, showering, intimacy, clothing, and resuming normal activities; anatomy and physiology of different types of ostomies; and various skin barriers, pouches, and accessory products that are available and when to use them. Each objective was presented by one of three CWOCN's.  Teaching techniques included lecture, PowerPoint presentation, and show and tell of the various products.  The presentations were interactive and attendees were able to ask questions and clarify information as needed.

This presentation was given weekly during the month of May 2011. In addition to the content presented by the CWOCN's, an ostomy patient shared her experiences of motherhood, starting a new business, traveling, and wearing stylish clothing while living with an ostomy for the first program. The presentation was videotaped and is available as a CEU program to all nurses in the facility through an online training modules program. Attendees complete an evaluation at the completion of the program.
