Benefits of a novel hydrogel colloidal sheet with active leptospermum honey

Purpose:   1) To improve healing with the use of a novel hydrogel colloidal sheet dressing (HCS) containing active leptospermum honey (ALH).   2) To clear wound beds of debris, prevent infection, reduce pain, control odor.

Methods: ALH HCS was trialed on a variety of wounds to provide the healing benefits of ALH^1,2 with comfort during wear and dressing changes . 

Results: Patient #1—A 22yo admitted with self-inflicted full-thickness bilateral arm wounds with > 80% slough.   ALH HCS applied and left in place until reaching > 70% saturation or up to one week.  After first week dressings had been changed twice, debris eliminated, and wounds presented as partial thickness.  At conclusion of week two all wounds had closed.

Patient #2—A 61yo presented after four days on floor with necrotic areas on anterior bony prominences-17 wounds in total. Debris, eschar and malodor were present.  Prealbumin was 14.  Patient was apprehensive regarding dressing changes experiencing pain with slightest touch.  ALH HCS provided immediate comfort and odor reduction.   During first week dressings were changed thrice at  70% saturation.  During week two all wounds reduced in size and dressings changed twice.  Malodor was eradicated and patient reported no further anxiety with changes.

Patient #3—An 84yo presented with non-healing area to scalp after receiving cancer treatments and episode of shingles.  Pain reported even with gentle touch making cleansing difficult.   Immediate relief with cooling sensation reported with HCS application. Staff conveyed ease of use.  Dressings changed twice weekly and by third week wound had closed.  Comfort and reduced pain reported throughout.

Conclusion: Utilizing ALH HCS has provided patients with pain and odor free dressing changes.  Even challenging patients utilizing ALH have demonstrated the ability to heal as presented in this series.   ALH HCS provided patient comfort, easy application, odor reduction and debridement leading to healing.
