1575 Conservative Sharp Debridement Competency per State Board of Nursing requirements

PURPOSE: The purpose is to share the guidelines and competency established by the hospital, to provide an example for other facilities, to meet a specific state's BON requirements. This presentation will describe the process of the collaboration with physicians, educators, and clinical staff in the development of a policy, competency and educational course for CSD.

PROBLEM: Nursing competencies for CSD was recognized as a need for healthcare personnel at the Hospital/clinics. The State Board of Nursing (BON) requires the following guidelines to establish competency.

  1. The hospital have a policy or guideline
  2. Conservative Sharp Debridement (CSD) course from a skilled clinician including demonstration of competency of CSD.
  3. Competency Tool Development and standardization

 

POPULATION:  The pediatric patients that presented with devitalized tissue impeding wound healing which meets the criteria for CSD.

 

PROCEDURE: Conservative Sharp Debridement skill was deemed to be a low volume high risk procedure.  Therefore the learner’s needs were assessed and the need to develop a policy, competency and class was established.

 

STRATEGY: The multidisciplinary team reviewed the literature, research and developed the strategy involved in the development of;

Policy

Competency criteria

Including Nurse Planner for continuing nursing contact hours for education activity

Education activity with a Power Point

Demonstration of CSD skill with return demonstration

Critical thinking scenarios

Competency tool to evaluate the skill

Standard order set for CSD

 

 

OUTCOMES: To increase the number of trained competent nurses/clinicians in performing CSD in the pediatric population. Establish evidence based practice in policies and procedures that will allow the nurses/clinicians the knowledge, confidence in the skill of performing CSD.  Ultimately when the clinicians are knowledgeable and well trained in the skill of CSD we can provide better and safe care to our patients by:  

  • Decreasing the risk of infection
  • Increasing the rate of wound healing
  • Decreasing the length of stay
