Backgrounds: While crusting technique is used to manage peristomal skin problems in foreign countries, this technique is used to prevent the problems in Korea. This study was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of crusting technique for prevention of peristomal skin problems in ileostomy patients.

Method: This study was prospectively performed through randomized controlled trial in 4 institutions. Ileostomy patients between 20 and 80 years in age who received self-care education for ileostomy and could perform self-care were enrolled. Experimental group applied pouches after single crusting technique, and control group did after cleansing with water and completely drying peristomal skin. Patients were followed for two months and peristomal skin condition was assessed through SACS three times; first visit after discharge, 1 month later, and 2 months later.

Results: Thirty patients were enrolled to the experimental group and 32 to the control group. They have been followed and data also are under collection.
