1513 Preventing Complications through Better Continence Management

Christine Pruneau, BSN, First Quality Healthcare, Manager of Clinical Services, Seattle, WA
Many WOCN’s are seeing patients in long term care and home settings treating IAD, UTI’s and other incontinence related issues.  But when well-managed, complications due to incontinence can be significantly decreased.  WOCN’s are in a unique position to influence continence management protocols and can do so with a few useful tools.  This presentation will focus on three aspects of managing irreversible incontinence:

1. Continence management techniques to prevent adverse effects of improper management

2. Influencing facility staff and home care givers to establish better protocols for managing incontinence

3. Learning simple process steps for establishing workable toileting programs

Attendees will come away with techniques designed to correct inadequate “check and change” practices, deficient perineal care procedures, and poor choices in absorbent/containment products applied by untrained caregivers.   In addition, attendees will learn to establish common sense toileting programs to decrease the number of incontinent episodes and lower the risk of complications.  Techniques discussed will incorporate CMS guidelines while also focusing on reducing hospital/nursing home readmissions.
