Purpose

Research shows that tapes and dressings removal is one of painful nursing interventions. Repeatedly surgical tape and wound dressing change will tend to cause a skin adhesion trauma and result in a waste of time and resources. The purpose of this study was to explore the effectiveness of practice teaching program in applying medical adhesive products to enhance nurses’ skill in wound-related nursing care.

Methods A self-developed questionnaire and checklist with an on-the-spot demonstration were used to collect data that included nurse’s basic information, recognitions, operations and satisfaction level at a workshop of medical center in Taipei. The study used a paired t-test to examine the pre-post effect of an education program.

Results

There were 34 nurses participated in this program. The results show that the nurses received an average recognition score of 62.8 (SD11.4) and 92.6 (SD 8.2) for pre- and post- program respectively; the nurses received an average operation score of 43.8 (SD15.1) and 97.4 (SD 4.0) for pre- and post- program respectively.

A statistically significant difference was found between the nurses’ recognition and operation base before and after the program (p < .000), but the nurses’ age, education level, seniority had no correlation with correct rate.

Moreover, the participant’s satisfaction level for the program was 96.8 (SD 3.6).

Discussion/Conclusion Most of the nurses respond well to this kind of teaching program. Based on these results, we are hopeful that a practice teaching program would increase nurses’ knowledge of the medical adhesive products and promote patient’s satisfaction regarding the wound care received.
