Standardization of wound, ostomy, and continence courses was established at a large homecare network with the goal to champion excellence of nurses. The steps to reach this goal were: creation of standardized course content, rotation of course schedules at regular intervals, participation of Regional Education Specialists (RES) and preceptors, and mandatory attendance for new hires.

Collaboratively, course content was created and reviewed by WOC Nurses, Education, and Informatics Departments. Content was updated to reflect current evidence-based best practices, adult learning principles, and establishment of continuing education credits. To encourage engagement in courses and validate knowledge, participants must complete a post-test to receive continuing education credit.

The RES and preceptors were competency tested in specific wound ostomy skills by the WOC nurse team. The RES and preceptors provide skill simulations to class participants at each site after the didactic content is covered. This opportunity helps prepare participants for competency testing with the preceptors during field orientation.

The methods of delivery for several courses has been revised in order to meet the needs of remote workforce, limit travel costs, and respect the work-life balance of the educators and nurses.  Nurses can participate via interactive online webinars from any location. The online education has also enabled the homecare to share education offerings with clinics and community partners fostering unity among the various healthcare providers.

The current program offers five courses specific to wound, ostomy, and continence nursing care scheduled throughout the homecare agencies. Future plans are to expand the education topics.
