Chronic wounds impose a significant and underappreciated burden to the individual, the healthcare system and society.1  A hard-to-heal wound is defined as one that fails to heal with standard therapy in an orderly and timely manner and applies to acute and chronic wounds, independent of wound type and etiology.2

Effective management of exudate, infection and complex tissue growth is a major challenge. With use of the Antimicrobial Fluid Management Dressing with silver technology (AFMD-S) we have seen an overall decrease in treatment time and decreased debridement time.3

Implementation of our treatment protocol: AFMD-S have improved healing, decreased cost and improved quality of life.

#1. 50 y.o female; left-side hemiplegia, W/C bound, edema. Venous Stasis ulcers developed in 10/1/2017. Patient received weekly debridement, collagen, alginate, ABD’s, 2-layer compression. AFMD-S with tubular compression started 6/15/18. In 18 days wound moved from 100% slough to complete epithelialization.

#2. 80 y.o. male; venous stasis, lymphedema, COPD. Three ulcers visualized 6/25/18,  treated with collagen and 2-layer compression. AFMD-S with tubular elastic compression started 7/9/18. Within seven days, one wound decreased in size (1.02 cm2 to 0.1 cm2). Wounds completely healing.

#3. 74 y.o. female with ganglion cyst removal 10 years ago. Every 2 years her leg/foot would swell up and wound re-open. Patient wears compression stockings inconsistently (too hot in the summer). Patient confided she is depressed that wound had been stagnant for 3 months now, thinking it would never heal!  AFMD-S was applied with tubular compression 8/6/18. The wound was closed in 25 days, patient was ecstatic!

#4. 66 y.o male; right AKA developed Stage 2 pressure injury while using prosthetic leg for ambulation. Previous products: honey, alginate and foam dressing with no healing. AFMD-S started 8/6/18, healed 9/6/2018.

Our patient’s wound healing was accelerated, satisfaction increased and number of visits and cost decreased.
