Introduction: The self-care actions are relevant to the independence of the individual seniors, because individuals have the capacity to develop their own activities. The purpose of this study is to assess the need for care in people who changed the physiological pathway of fecal diversion for an anomalous called ostomy. Return to the subjects of the study is relevant to the degree that we investigate the strengths and difficulties in relation to self-care and the importance of understanding the cleaning and replacement of the device providing a alutas living with an ostomy. Objectives: To assess self-care deficit; trace the socio-economic profile of those seniors, to approach the problems encountered with the taxonomy II North American Nursing Diagnoses Association (NANDA). Methodology: An exploratory and descriptive qualitative approach, developed in the Ostomy Association in Fortaleza-Ceará-Brazil, 110 ostomy; over 18 years. Data collection was performed by interview technique. Data analysis: using simple descriptive statistics, compared and discussed in the light of literature. The project was approved by the Ethics Committee of the State University of Ceará under nº086229427. Results: It was found that 61,81% is male 38,18% male and female, literate, with monthly income below the poverty level and from the state capital. Among the causes that led to ostomy predominant cancer resulting in permanent stomas, and 39,09% held the device chance on average every four days. The majority of 90,91% was driven to self-care in the Association and the facilities/path present difficulties related to the use of the device and its association with malignancy. Among the nursing diagnoses found path: Self-Care Deficit Hygiene related to disgust when handling the waste. Conclusion: People seniors have self-care deficit, and between them stand out as they do not have the will to face the self-care, and realize that with negative feelings.
