A Quest For the “DREAM CREAM”: Finding an effective multifaceted topical emollient

Background
Many different emollients and cream remedies have been used for the reddened tissue of Incontinence Associated Dermatitis (IAD) and have not been adequate to use for other wound etiologies. After using a topical emollient specific to the regulation of the pH of the irritated tissue and wound environment, it was found that this dimethicone-based skin protectant with pH adjusted features topical emollient could be used on various other skin disorders, as well as Incontinence Associated Dermatitis.
Objective
Discover a preferred topical emollient that effectively acted upon the greatest number of skin disorders.
List and describe skin disorders found effectively treated by the preferred, effective single topical emollient discovered.
Method
Requested 54 staff nurses of three different critical access hospitals to compare two brands of dimethicone-based topical emollient creams for two weeks. Nurses were instructed to use the emollient creams on opposing body parts.
Results
It was discovered that Brand A was:
• Possessed a pleasing fragrance
It was discovered that Brand B had positive effects in regards to:
• Acne
• Cracked cuticles
• Insect bites
• Razor rash
• Dry, cracked skin
• Damaged skin preventative (multiple hand washing)
• Diabetic Skin
• Eczema and Psoriasis symptoms

Conclusion
A specific brand of dimethicone-based skin protectant with pH adjusted features has the ability to be used across a broader band of skin disorders with greater effectiveness. Effectiveness being defined as: less product needing to be used, greater efficiency noted, and cost effectiveness within facilities as only one cream is necessary.
