Introduction; Recently, ceramide infused ostomy skin barriers have been introduced to the ostomy market.  Ceramides are naturally occurring intercellular lipids present in the stratum corneum that prevent moisture loss and guard against pathogens and irritants.  While manufacturers of ceramide infused skin barriers continue to investigate potential benefits in the use of ceramides, a recent product evaluation explored clinician satisfaction with usage in conjunction with an overall skin care plan.  The data presents findings from 71 UK stoma care nurses evaluating one-piece pouches with an infused skin barrier on 167 stoma patients.

Objectives: The aim of this evaluation was to obtain clinician feedback on the use of ostomy pouches with ceramide infused skin barriers with patients selected as a matter of standard care.

Methods: Stoma Care Nurses were provided with one-piece pouches and asked to select patients for evaluation as a matter of standard care.  Patient evaluations were conducted pre and post usage.

Results: Pouches with ceramide infuses skin barriers were associated with an 81.8% decrease in the use of skin preparation accessories. More than once daily pouch changes decreased by 39%. Satisfaction with ease of application and use was 86%. Satisfaction with adherence (stickiness) was 82%. Satisfaction with wear time was 80%.  At the termination of the evaluation 71% of nurses would recommend or continue to use the pouches with ceramide infused barriers with the patient.

Conclusion:

Overall, the nurses in this evaluation expressed satisfaction with the pouches with ceramide infused skin barriers when used as a standard of care.
