Objective: To determine the efficacy of a Gentian Violet/Methylene Blue (GV/MB) foam dressing on preparing a wound bed for healing.

Introduction: Proper preparation of the wound bed is essential to wound healing. The DIME acronym, developed by Sibbald et al (2007), suggests that Debridement of devitalized tissue, Infection and Inflammation control, Moisture balance and Edges of wound constitute the Paradigm for Wound Bed Preparation. The WOC Nurses at an academic medical center in the mid-atlantic region of the US used a broad-spectrum antibacterial foam dressing on 5 non-randomized patients to determine the usefulness of this dressing in wound bed preparation.

Method: GV/MB foam dressing was applied to wounds in various patients in an acute care setting. Photos were taken on initial application and on subsequent follow-up visits to determine the effectiveness of the dressing.

Conclusion: Use of GV/MB prepares a wound bed for healing as suggested by the DIME accronym. The dressing proved to debride without the use of additional products, controlled infection and inflammation, achieved moisture balance in the wound bed and reduced epibole at the wound edges.
